Mervyn was born in Plymouth on 29th May, 1933 to parents Joe and Myrtle.
A younger brother to Joe, Mervyn played football at a high level in Plymouth schoolboys and
continued his love of football throughout his life alongside a successful career as a Local Government Officer in the Education Department in Finance and then in School Staffing roles – first in Plymouth and latterly in Guildford. After retirement Mervyn continued working with the Diocese Schools and as Clerk to the Governors at a number of schools and colleges notably including Godalming College. He was recognised for his Services to Education with an invitation to a Buckingham Palace Summer Garden Party.
Mervyn acted as a volunteer for Guildford Abbeyfield homes for the elderly, coordinating the
activities of the ‘Friends’ to help take residents on outside trips. He also joined the U3A (Guildford) – enjoying the Jazz group and the Walking group in particular and again acted as volunteer Secretary for the group for several years and leading one of the walking groups.
As a family man, Mervyn enjoyed over sixty years married to Ann, and loved spending time
with his three children (Keith, Barry and Claire), ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He always had energy to play and have fun and socialise with friends and family – he will be sorely missed by many.
