I was appointed as Headteacher at Glebelands School, Cranleigh in 1986 and often had occasion to seek Mervyn's advice and support at the South West Surrey Area Education Office. He always generous with his time and in all our dealings was able to bring a lightness of touch and good humour to what were sometimes contentious problems. He was sorely missed when he retired.
